Teen Alcohol Abuse, The Link Between Abusive Drinking And Coping Skills, And The Necessity For Coping Skills Education
Recent teenage alcohol abuse statistics demonstrate the fact that alcohol abuse among teens is increasing in the United States. What are some of the reasons for this? Many alcohol abuse experts assert that wine, beer, and liquor advertisements generated by the media are a key reason for the proliferation of teen alcohol abuse.
Other alcoholism professionals think that the increase in teen alcohol abuse is due to the acceptability and ease of access of wine, beer, and liquor in our society. Still other substance abuse experts state that numerous teens engage in alcohol abuse because of the increased anxiety that they go through.
From a somewhat different viewpoint, because both parents in a number of families work, the lack of parental supervision surely has to play a significant part in the spread of teenage alcohol abuse. And lastly, a variety of alcoholism authorities claim that the increase in teen alcohol abuse is due, in some measure, to our lax society.
One facet of teenage alcohol abuse that looks like it is poorly reported in the alcoholism research literature, on the other hand, is the lack of educational programs that teach teenagers how to upgrade their coping skills so that their abusive and hazardous drinking behavior is notably decreased or done away with. Stated differently, science has demonstrated that there is an indirect association between poor coping skills and hazardous and abusive drinking.
Basically, this means that the poorer the coping skills, the greater the frequency of alcohol abuse. To the extent that this is a correct argument, why isn't coping skills training an essential part of the academic curriculum in all of our elementary schools, junior high schools, and high schools?
Let us construct a scenario for explanatory purposes. Let us imagine a society in which all people are trained how to develop solid coping skills all the way from kindergarten up to and including their senior year in high school. In such a society, when life gets difficult, students who are "coping skills masters" will be able to respond in a more healthy and more successful manner, as opposed to others who are unsuccessful in their attempts to implement their coping skills.
Stated differently, students who demonstrate first rate coping skills will be more able to think proactively and display excellent decision making as opposed to teenagers who, because they do not possess good coping skills, gravitate to the "quick fix" of hazardous drinking.
What would happen in the above "ideal" society, additionally, if teenagers not only received top quality coping skills education but also got an exclusive education that focused on the short term and long term negative results associated with drug abuse and alcohol abuse? Such an emphasis on teenage alcohol and drug abuse facts, along with more advanced coping skills education, it is declared, would help teens avoid the apparent charm associated with teen drinking and, consequently, would substantially decrease the harmful drinking behavior shown by teens in our country.
There are certainly many valid reasons why so many of our adolescents drink in a hazardous manner. Such a complicated problem demands an extensive and more pertinent response by our students, educators, politicians, and parents so that our teenagers can learn how to cope with life's problems in a more productive and responsible way rather than resorting to hazardous and excessive drinking to solve their problems.
