Hazardous And Excessive Drinking Leads To Depression And Mental Health Issues, An Enabling Spouse, And Motivation For Affirmative Change It took several years but Sarah eventually determined that she had enough with her husband's negative drinking. She was weary from seeing Keith come home in the early hours of the morning from drinking instead of spending time with her and the children. She was also fed up from the second DUI Keith recently got. Furthermore she was exhausted from making explanations for her husband when he couldn't show up for work due to his hazardous and careless drinking. In a similar manner, she was nervous about the fact that their relationship was deteriorating due to Keith's excessive and hazardous drinking. And lastly she was fed up from the precarious financial mess into which he had placed his family due to his careless and excessive drinking behavior. One Thursday evening when Sarah was pondering what she could do about her husband's hazardous and excessive drinking, she got to the point that she honestly had to do something helpful to cut into the destructive cycle of Keith's hazardous drinking behavior. So Sarah looked in the yellow pages under "alcohol rehab" and discovered many rehab clinics that were all located less than 10 miles away from where Keith and she resided. When Sarah called each treatment facility she introduced herself and said that her spouse was engaging in careless and excessive drinking behavior. She also said that her husband had a top quality health insurance program at his job and that inpatient or outpatient alcohol dependency treatment would be covered if a health care practitioner in the company health network called for the treatment. After listening to Sarah describe her husband's negative drinking, the physician in a supportive but resolute manner told Sarah how she more likely than not adding to her husband's hazardous drinking through the years. How? Essentially by making excuses for him rather than allowing him to go through the results of his excessive and abusive drinking behavior. Stated differently, the healthcare practitioner stated to Sarah that she may have been unintentionally enabling Keith's hazardous and careless drinking behavior. The doctor also stressed the fact that Sarah could not control Keith's conduct. With the support and encouragement of the rehabilitation team at the treatment facility, however, she would not only be able to learn how to stop contributing to Keith's hazardous and abusive drinking but she would also be able to learn how to motivate him to schedule an appointment at the treatment clinic so that he could discuss his unhealthy drinking healthcare practitioner. The good news was that after Sarah mentioned this to Keith and he saw that she was serious, he told her that he had been quite upset with his hazardous drinking behavior and that he was quite comforted to realize that Sarah wanted to do something constructive about his careless drinking behavior. As a consequence, he made an appointment to see a counselor at the local alcohol rehabilitation facility. While simply calling a rehabilitation facility does not ensure that an individual's careless and abusive drinking behavior will become less problematic or that an individual will automatically be more receptive to learning about alcohol abuse facts, calling for an appointment is undeniably a necessary component in the rehabilitation process. And due to the fact that Keith wanted to learn more about alcohol abuse statistics, about getting professional assistance for his harmful drinking, and about alcohol abuse and alcoholism the probability for a successful recovery was greatly augmented. |
