| A Wednesday Evening Out With Pals From College At A Local Tavern Results In Excessive And Abusive Drinking And Symptoms Of Alcohol Poisoning When Lois was in high school, she had secured a reputation as a studious individual who rarely, if ever, partied with her peers. So Lois and several of her classmates went to a local tavern where they had a few wine coolers. As the evening moved forward, Lois and her pals continued to drink. In fact, she was having such a fabulous time that she didn't want the night to end. After drinking around forty-five minutes when Lois began to slur her speech, talk in a confused manner, and then pass out, nonetheless, her classmates promptly knew that they needed to call that they needed to call 911, the emergency services number, and ask for medical assistance because they thought that Lois was displaying alcohol poisoning symptoms. Lois was very aware that she came close to dying from an alcohol overdose and, consequently, was grateful to be alive. At the same time, however, she was somewhat disheartened knowing that she had almost died the previous night. Her Mother and Father knew how rigorously she worked in graduate school and how little she let herself have any fun. Nonetheless, they also knew that Lois needed to steer clear of careless and irresponsible drinking. As a result, they recommended that down the road, whenever a drinking occasion arises, that she always drink in moderation. Lois was of the same opinion and promised her parents and her friends that she would never again drink in an excessive and hazardous manner. In her own words, "I never had an inkling that I might become one of the alcohol poisoning statistics in the local college newspaper. I now realize that irresponsible drinking is not my style. I pledge that this will never happen again." Fortunately, Lois was not only "book smart" but she also had a lot of common sense. That is, she instantaneously grasped the fact that she had made an error and decided that she would never make the same error in judgment again. In fact, she now knew that she had involved herself in "binge drinking" and that even one instance of this kind of abusive and excessive drinking can result in a loss of life.
