A Physical Education And Health Teacher Teaches Her Students About The Significance Of Alcohol Dependency Signs
Miss Jackson was a health instructor at the most popular private high school in the region. Although she had been teaching for only four years, she had already established a reputation as an educator with instructional techniques that inspired and motivated students to think and to learn.
For instance, one Thursday afternoon she addressed her pupils and said the following: "For the next few days we are going to learn about some usual alcoholism signs from a more broad-based perspective and we are also going to learn about several of the most common signs of alcoholism from a more specific viewpoint."
"Not every one of these alcoholism warning signs will definitely demonstrate that a drinker with a drinking problem is an alcohol dependent person, but the more signs that a drinker manifests, the greater the possibility that he or she is an individual who is addicted to alcohol."
Miss Jackson then explained to the class that each person would be responsible for examining four alcohol addiction signs and then presenting his or her conclusions to the other members in the class via a fifteen minute oral presentation.
The day after all of the students completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a sheet of paper with a list of all the alcoholism signs that were presented and discussed in the presentations and in class. Miss Jackson then asked her pupils to go over the list and rank the top six alcoholism signs that were most indicative of alcohol addiction. After approximately ten minutes, Miss Jackson collected the sheets of paper and explained to the students in her classroom that after she evaluates the numbers, she will present her findings the next school day.
Miss Jackson asked her students to look over the information she handed out and then to raise their hand if they had any concerns, issues, or questions. Within 40 or 50 seconds, virtually every pupil in the class raised his or her hand. It was evident that the students had some concerns, questions, or issues about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism experts. For example, just about every individual in the classroom had an issue with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism authorities, namely, "Do you feel exceedingly ill when you quit drinking?"
Miss Jackson then told the pupils in her class why this answer was the most accurate sign of alcohol dependency. She stressed the fact that the key difference between alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse is the physical addiction that is experienced with alcohol addiction and not with alcohol abuse.
Basically this means that when an alcohol dependent person all of a sudden quits drinking, she or he will experience alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the importance of alcohol withdrawals in the life of the individual who is addicted to alcohol, the students started to grasp the main difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency.
A few minutes later the bell rang, signaling the end of class. Based on the excitement exhibited by the students when they were leaving the room, Miss Jackson knew that she had inspired and motivated the students in her class to stop and think about a vital social problem and health issue that exists in our society.
